There’s nothing worse than attempting to fight the sniffles during winter. As more of us turn to sustainable living and farming, growing our own veggies to help fight off colds and flu sounds like a brilliant idea. Here are three vegetables that you can grow in your garden during winter that will help you beat the winter blues.
Spinach or Swiss Chard
Popeye ate his spinach for a reason! Spinach and Swiss Chard is a superfood and is great for your health. Packed with plenty of vitamin C, it’s a great way to fight off the common cold and relieve symptoms of sickness. While this leafy green can be grown throughout the year, it’s best to sow seeds when it’s not too hot or too cold (August – December and January – April). Whether you’re looking to fight the winter blues or enjoy a healthier lifestyle, spinach is a great addition to your garden.
Kale
The perfect veggie to grow in winter, kale prefers cooler temperatures, so planting in late summer to autumn is suggested. While not considered a superfood, it is packed with tons of nutrients, including vitamins C and E that help fight colds. It’s also a great addition to any yummy soup or paired with healthy fats like avocado or olive oil.
Garlic
Garlic is known to pack a punch when it comes to fighting off infections and illnesses, and there’s research to prove this too. Not only is this an easy vegetable to grow, but it’s perfect for growing in the winter, with February to May being the prime months to plant this pungent veg. Pop a raw clove into your mouth or add it to your dishes to help fight colds and flu.
