Observing not disturbing – this is the motto of Hermanus-based whale watching operators Southern Right Charters.

Around June every year, the gentle giants of the deep start visiting our calm waters. The Hermanus coastline is an excellent location from which to view Southern Right, Humpback and elusive Bryde’s whales. Southern Right Charters are legally permitted to be within 50 m of the whales and what I find fascinating is that they are naturally curious, often approaching the boat to observe onlookers – it’s really a case of who is viewing who.

Started in 1999, the company is as progressive as it as environmentally sensitive; the safety and conservation of the whales and marine life are principal. Trips are daily and are typically 1.5 hours to 3 hours long, weather permitting from June – December from 9 am, 12 pm and 3 pm.

Additional departures will be at 7 am from September onwards.
