I’m a sucker for a good timelapse video, especially when the subject matter is Cape Town.

Occasionally my passion for timelapse extends to footage filmed from what is now commonly referred to as a ‘drone’ – one of those little flying quad-copter thingies that you attach a GoPro to and send soaring into the sky.

Charles Gremillion is a professional Cape Town drone video maker and all-round videographer. He’s put together a montage of his drone-flying antics on the top of Table Mountain, at the Hout Bay Harbour and in the Imizamo Yethu township.

With summer now firmly upon us, and conditions perfect for drone-flying, I do hope I’m going to see a few more videos like this; offering me a view of the Mother City from a slightly different angle.

Check out the full video below and make sure you put it in HD:

As of 1 July 2015 a new set of drone regulations came into effect in South Africa, making it illegal to fly in certain areas (within 10km from an airport), above certain altitudes, etc. So before you rush out and buy a drone for Christmas, make sure you brush up on the rules first. You can find all the legal info you might need at the non-profit website www.safedrone.co.za.

When we have a president who thinks he’s above the law and does as he pleases, I see no reason to stop taking footage of our beautiful country while it still is beautiful.
