With camera in hand, Francis Gersbach, aka Great Grampops, documents the world around him in a visual diary for his great grand children. Whether it’s food, events, people or stunning scenery, Great Grampops shares incredible images on his Instagram. While the images are aimed for his great grand kids, everyone enjoys viewing life through his lense.
We caught up with the photographer/visual storyteller to find out what he loves about the Mother City.
1 How does Cape Town influence your photography?
I’ve found that Cape Town is full of variety, whether it’s people, places, activities and just about anything that I could experience through my viewfinder. I found at first I was shooting landscapes, but now, my feed is based on my experiences which solidify the storytelling theme I was going for.
2 What do you love most about this city?
I love the pulse of the city, the accessibility to different scenarios and the fact that there are so many options within a moment’s drive away.
3 If your friend was visiting Cape Town for the first time, where would you take them first?
It must be for a walk up Lion’s Head… It’s a great intro to the city with it’s 360 degree views.
4 Describe the city in three words.

Cosmopolitan
5 If you were to create a souvenir that represents Cape Town, what would it be or look like?
Nothing like me, but possibly either a Lighthouse or Table Mountain
6 What’s your favourite Cape catchphrase?
‘We should make a plan’
7 Three Capetonians we should be following online?
