Getting a decent couch can cost you an arm and a leg, with furniture prices only exacerbated by a pandemic-riddled economy. So, this begs the question: to rent or to buy?

Millennials have always marched to the beat of their own drum. It should come as no surprise then that this generation is opting to rent furniture and appliances instead of forking out the money to make those purchases. According to IOL,  7 out of 10 prefer to rent these commodities.

So, what’s the reason? Laziness, lifestyle, freedom? Well, all of the above. In a desperate attempt to break free from their financial shackles, millennials choosing to focus on their careers rather than owning assets and making large purchases.

Here are three reasons why renting has become the new “thing”:

Moving becomes easier

Millennials are looking for convenience, and with this generation opting to focus on making the bucks, moving homes is a given. While it’s great to purchase that stylish L-shaped couch from Coricraft, you’ll eventually need to lug it to your next destination with huge pick-up and delivery costs burning a hole in your pocket. Alternatively, going through the effort of selling your items may end in frustration. Moving and settling in becomes much simpler when renting.

It’s cheaper

Who wouldn’t want to spend less on furniture and appliances? We’ve all seen the price tag for a decent piece of furniture, and first-time renters or buyers may find it difficult to furnish their place from scratch. While eating on the floor with plastic utensils is a right of passage, many choose to avoid this growing pain by paying a small monthly rent for their desired items – no huge payment required, making it easier on their pockets.

It’s easier to upgrade

Home decor trends are always changing, and one thing never remains your favourite forever. Renting items ensures that you’re able to indulge your changing decor tastes without paying the price. Spot a new SMEG appliance that you’re dying to add to your kitchen? Renting offers you the option to swap items with what you’re currently loving or looking to get.
