Big smiling sharks, a limber-limbed octopus, floating stingrays, sea anemones drifting in the current, giant swaying underwater forests, terrific turtles, adorable seahorses, and of course happy-flappy penguins … These are just some of the amazing animals you will encounter at the Two Oceans Aquarium at the V&A Waterfront.
The Aquarium, a long-time favourite with locals and tourists alike, has been proudly showcasing South Africa’s stunning marine biodiversity for 25 years. And they are ready to welcome visitors to their “shores” this December with a great competition and extended operating hours lined up. As always, the Aquarium is open every day, come rain or shine.
From December 15 to 24, the Aquarium will be giving away an annual membership to one lucky visitor every day! With a membership, you can visit the fish as often as you wish, plus you gain access to exclusive events and discounts at the Gift Shop and Bootlegger Aquarium. Memberships make great gifts, guaranteeing memories that will last a lifetime.
Then, from December 26 to January 10, the Aquarium’s extended hours kick in – they will close an hour later (7pm) so you can take advantage of a late-afternoon visit with the fish.
With strict capacity management in place, it’s recommended that you visit the Aquarium during “low tide” – before December 26 – when most people are still busy with their Christmas shopping. Alternatively, opt for visiting early in the morning (the Aquarium opens at 9am during the holidays) or later in the afternoon – there’s nothing quite like a leisurely stroll amongst aquatic wonders to wind down the day.
Want to do something totally different? The Aquarium offers scuba diving for all ages, sizes and experience levels. Kids from as young as 12 can explore nature in this safe and exciting way; and as any diver will tell you, marine life is even more breath-taking on the other side of the window.
For those concerned about Covid-19 safety aspects, the Aquarium has put in place several measures to ensure the well-being of all visitors. Numbers inside the building are closely managed to ensure that no more than 50% of public capacity is occupied. Hand sanitiser is freely available, and masks are mandatory.
Some interactive exhibits are temporarily closed, and feeding presentations will not take place (in order to discourage gatherings). Puppet Shows continue six times a day in the Aquarium’s Auditorium. All 8 000+ individual animals are still viewable.
The Aquarium can’t wait to sea you this holiday!
