If you’re a woman who appreciates finely crafted clothes, contemporary design and quality materials, it’s time you visit Virgule, an impeccably curated designer boutique in Claremont. Owner Marinda Lakhnati has a penchant for edgy design and European taste. CTE.com chats to her about her covetable clothing store.
When did Virgule start and what inspired it?
Virgule is a dream realised. It was an idea, then a dream and today a reality. We opened at the end of April 2014. I was born with a passion for design, and having lived in the heart of Europe I admired the stylish culture of the Europeans. The way they dress effortlessly, with an individual style that is a way of life. There was an enormous choice of designer products across the board, with a choice of quality, craftsmanship and styles. Returning to South Africa, I was tempted to start something and utilise my experiences, so I decided to live, work and play my passion.
What is the style you hope to achieve?
At Virgule we have created a universe that reflects l’Esprit du Temps – an ever changing present. Women should dress from their feet up and have a refreshing access to worldly fashion, so we have created a stage where anything can happen and where your heart and senses take the leading role.
I will strive to take them through a refreshing experience by providing them with globally and responsibly sourced high-end designer footwear and coup de Coeur accessories – while never departing from functional essence.
How do you curate your shoes/products?
I will be working with a renewed base of carefully researched and selected niche and edgy upcoming designers. Virgule is a playful space with charismatic and unique combinations of goods for the multi-faceted shopper, who is looking for an unforgettable shopping experience. Fashion, art and design mirror where we culturally are or where we are going. One has to feel the mood and respond. We need to be in context. And this is part of what drives the search for products.
What makes this boutique unique?
The brief was to create a retail space that can change constantly to ensure it remains interesting. It had to be original, honest and unorthodox – think out of the box and create a space with attitude! The materials used will oxidise and change colour over time. This all fits with the philosophy of Virgule.
The concept allows change to the store configuration, but also re-using the entire space by presenting a visual arts gallery, a space for a photo-shoot or a Virgule dinner. Last but not least, the space is not in a large shopping mall, but it stands alone and has an identity, something fresh in the heart of concrete.
Do you have a favourite item?
I have an eclectic mix of designer handbags, shoes and jewellery. A recently acquired pair of black Dior pumps with an amazing heel – that comes to mind.
