Many South African’s have been waiting in anticipation for the big launch… and it is finally here! Spotify South Africa launched with little fanfare in the country yesterday afternoon, they are now in 64 countries worldwide. Let the streaming begin.
Spotify SA is offering a free, and ad-free R59.99 p/m premium version, making it cheaper (R50 less) than the USA clients. They are now matching competitors Apple Music, Deezer and Joox. What makes Spotify unique is they offer a free version, so consumers can listen to songs at no cost with only occasionally being interrupted by adverts. Users can only download songs onto their device if they have the premium version. Spotify has more than 71-million premium-paying customers worldwide.
A Swedish company, Spotify has struggled to turn a profit since its inception in 2008, but is currently valued at R224-billion. In 2017, Spotify generated R58-billion in revenue but posted R19-billion in losses. The service blamed excessive royalty fees for its loses. They pays 70% of its total revenue to rights holders.
CEO Daniel Ek said, “We really do believe that we can improve the world, one song at a time.”
Welcome to Spotify, let’s see what this hype is about.
