Get ready for the Mother City to come alive with beautiful, imaginative costumes and floats. The Cape Town Carnival, a celebration of the metamorphic power of creativity – celebrates our diverse cultures and love for the city.
The first carnival took place in 2010 in Long Street, during the buzz and festivities of the 2010 Soccer World Cup. The city lit up with floats, dancers and mesmerising acts in the aim to bring people together, the Carnival inspires people to create, build and play together.
The annual Carnival connects thousands of spectators, on it’s new home, Green Point’s famous Fan Walk, to join the extravagant parade of 1 500 performers in 43 performing groups from 27 different areas. Although the main events start in the evening, there are various activities in the afternoon from 3 pm. The pure joy of being able to walk in a no-car street, enjoy great food long the way and mix with people of the city and visitors – is going to be great.
It is a fantastic living example of how an event of this kind can break down social barriers and help form lasting relationships. “Social cohesion has always been at the forefront of our vision for the carnival,” said Rachel Jafta, chairperson of the Cape Town Carnival Trust.
Every year the crowd is revved-up by the oiled down local firefighters who parade topless down the fan walk. A new addition to the Carnival will be the two Cape Town Carnival Village spaces with live music and refreshments on offer.
The Cape Town Carnival, which takes place on 17 March 2018, has become a must-attend event for both locals and out-of-towners. This year the Carnival parade kicks off at 7pm.
Be prepared to be amazed by the majestic floats, lights, vibrance and festivities.
