We’ve all been at home a lot more since the lockdown was first instated in March 2020. With so much time and so little to do, many turned to new hobbies for entertainment.
An independent online survey commissioned by First for Women shows that 100% of South African female participants picked up a new hobby during the lockdown, and half of them continue to practice the hobby every day.
Here are the top hobbies women in SA picked up:
- Arts & Crafts
- Gardening
- Cooking
- Reading
- Baking
- Knitting/Crocheting
- Running/Jogging
- Meditation
- Walking
- Writing
The survey also found that learning a new skill provided major mental health benefits. Half of the respondents reported feeling happier and 22% said their hobbies helped to reduce stress.
“Experts agree that a hobby can keep you mentally fit, stress-free and confident. When you are focused and invested on a task, you forget your fears and worries and are able to re-establish control. All important factors during these times,” said Head of First for Women, Seugnette van Wyngaard.
