It’s no secret that Cape Town is a sought-after film location. Not only is the city a pliable space for crews to create completely new towns and worlds, it’s also a low-cost alternative to say, New York or Japan. And whilst the likes of the latest instalments of The Maze Runner and Tomb Raider have all called Cape Town home for some time, other smaller productions that grace our TV screens on the daily are also shot here year after year.
Here’s a quick round-up of shows that have been shot in the city – and when they’ll be airing!
1 Paul Hollywood City Bakes
Well-known baker and TV personality Paul Hollywood is back with the second season of Paul Hollywood City Bakes – and has zeroed in on Cape Town as one of the top foodie destinations for his show. From visiting the city’s much-loved Charley’s Bakery in District Six and The Kitchen in Woodstock, to spotlighting a bread-baking initiative within the Mother City’s townships, the Cape Town episode is packed with good food and all the best culinary offerings you can find around our city.
Look out for appearances by celebrity chefs Siba Mtongana and Reuben Riffel who gives Paul a lesson in the art of the South African braai. The Cape Town episode will air Food Network, DStv Channel 175 on Friday 28 July at 8 pm
2 Siba’s Table: Sibalicious!
Food writer, celebrity TV chef and food judge Siba Mtongana’s Siba’s Table is quite the addiction – whether you cook or not! Having aired since 2013, the show is still a huge hit and season 4 brings with it even more tasty treats and plenty of new faces. This year, Siba has filmed both seasons 3 and 4 right here in Hout Bay and will also feature on the Cape Town episode of Paul Hollywood City Bakes as one of his local hosts.
Look out for the viewer-submitted recipes that Siba will spotlight in each episode. Season three will start airing in September 2017 while season four will be on-screen in 2018, both on Food Network and DStv Channel 175.
3 Outlander
This hit show about a time-traveling nurse from American network Starz filmed in Cape Town for a few months from the end of 2016. The city was transformed into Jamaica for season 3 and it’s recently been announced the show has been renewed for a fourth season too – great news for fans.
Look out for the Cape Town Film Studios pirate ship (usually visible from the N2), and catch Outlander on M-Net Edge, DStv Channel 102 in September.
4 Black Mirror
Black Mirror, a sci-fi series that provides chilling accounts of how technology integrates into our everyday lives, recently filmed episodes of it’s third season in Cape Town. The first episode, Nosedive is centred on the dark side of social media while episode 4 called San Junipero, showcases breathtaking shots of the city as a fictional seaside town.
Catch season 1 to 3 of Black Mirror currently on Netflix.
