You’ll be forgiven if you thought Stellenbosch’s only real offering was its bountiful wine farms. And as exceptionally lovely as each of them are, we think it’s worth exploring Matie-land for some other activities too.

Whether you’re into quirky shops, getting your fitness on or simply enjoying nature, there’s something for you to do. Take a look.

1. Shop at Oom Samie se Winkel

This little curio shop in the heart of Stellenbosch truly beams with character. “Continuing the fine old tradition of the rural trading post, Oom Samie Se Winkel stocks odds & ends, traditional wares & handicrafts,” they claim on Facebook. Visit the charming store to find various collector’s items, antiques and other unique odds and ends. And of course, nod your head to Oom Samie, the mannequin sitting on the bench outside.

2. Explore the town on a bicycle

A bicycle ride never gets old, and what better way to see a beautiful town than on two wheels with the wind blowing through your hair? If you don’t own a bicycle, you can easily rent one from any of the bike stores like Ride In. Stellies is bike-friendly in the sense that most places have stands outside where you can leave your cycle. Just remember to bring a decent lock! Stop for a coffee here and a snack there. Plan your route and get peddling.

3. Stroll through the Stellenbosch University Botanical Gardens

Nothing beats walking in nature on a beautiful day. Stellies has one of the finest botanical gardens any plant lover could ask for, and this landmark is a truly tranquil and serene place. Hundreds (if not thousands) of different plant and tree species will welcome you. Pack a picnic to enjoy in the shade or pop in to Katjiepiering Restaurant.

4. Visit the Village Museum

If you love history, you’ll be in paradise. The museum exhibits four houses of historical interest and their gardens, showcasing the fascinating architecture, interior design and technological developments of the eras that each house was built in, as far back as the 1700s. Take a tour to yesteryear!

5. Eat, drink and be merry at Root 44 market

Fresh food? Locally crafted drinks? Live music? If those sound good to you, you’ve come to the right place. This vibrant market is just the right way to spend a Saturday. Ample space for the kids to run around as mom and dad while away the hours to the beat of local talent. Shop anything from food and drinks to handmade arts and crafts.

Root 44 market is temporarily closed, but is planning to reopen soon. Keep an eye on their Facebook page!
