In Issue 2-2017 of Cape Etc Magazine, we introduced you to the phenomenally talented Capetonian composer Alice Gillham. Having been trained as a classical pianist and flautist, won various academic awards for her musical prowess and worked, produced and taught musicians, artists and composers in South African, Australia, New York, London and Germany, she’s no stranger to the stage. This year, however, Alice is embarking on her biggest – and most passionate – project yet: a homegrown musical titled Calling Me Home. Read more about the production in the latest issue of Cape {Town} Etc then scroll down for Alice’s thoughts on her own home – Cape Town.
1 How does Cape Town influence you and your music?
Cape Town is so beautiful! I’m very affected by the beauty around us. The Mother City is also a city of colourful and vibrant music and art with its wonderful collection of musicians, dancers and painters…
2 What do you love most about this city?
Cape Town’s diversity and tolerance of all people. We are a small city with a big heart!
3 If your friend was visiting Cape Town for the first time, which theatre or performing arts institution would you take them to?
It’s difficult to choose; there are so many wonderful theatres. I would urge them to visit Artscape (where Calling Me Home will be performed next year), the Fugard and the Theatre on the Bay.
4 Describe Cape Town in three words.
Diverse, beautiful, home.
5 If you were to compose a piece of music that represents Cape Town, what would it sound like?
It would sound like Calling Me Home. I would try to write music filled with hope, courage and beauty.
6 What’s your favourite Cape catchphrase?
Boom boom hallelujah.
7 Which three Capetonians should we follow online?
Zolani Mahola, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Tutu Legacy Foundation, David Kramer – and Cape {Town} Etc, of course!
