For years, Locnville has kept us on the dancefloor with their amazing beats and catchy lyrics. Now the twins who, if you’ve been living under a rock these past few years, are descendents of Charlie Chaplin, and are taking their musical prowess to the next level with their very own production company ContraBanned (CB).
This Sunday, CB will be hosting an epic party at Shimmy Beach Club featuring musical heavyweights, TIMO ODV, Aewon Wolf, Sketchy Bongo and Chad Da Don. We caught up with the Locnville boys, Andrew and Brian, for their take on the Mother City.
1 How does Cape Town influence you and your music when you visit?
Andrew: It’s where I spent most of my childhood growing up so it definitely has a comfortable and familiar feeling, which can help you relax and let creativity flow.
Brian: I would say Cape Town is the foundation of everything we create because we both grew up here. For me, I love spending time in the Cape when I’m in the writing phase of an album.
2 What do you love most about this city?
Andrew: Much like everyone, I’m a big fan of hanging out by the coast. But the thing I love most is getting to spend time with my dad, who we really don’t get to see often.
Brian: There’s a lot I love: I’m a huge fan of little boutique restaurants and lounges, which are a dime a dozen in Cape Town, and obviously I also like the beach because these days I don’t see much beaches.
3 If a friend was heading to Cape Town for the first time, where would you take them first?
Andrew: I’d probably take them to La Colombe – the food and wine pairing is incredible.
Brian: The first place I’d take them is the V&A Waterfront. It’s one of those places that’s a must when visiting the Mother City for the first time.
4 Describe the city in three words.
Andrew: Beautiful, crowded, trendy.
Brian: Unique, relaxed, inspirational.
5 If you were to create a souvenir that represents Cape Town, what would it be or look like?
Andrew: …
Brian: A hipster bobble head.
6 What’s your favourite Cape catchphrase?
Andrew: ‘Aweh’ as a greeting – it’s just so Cape Town.
Brian: ‘Hos’. A friend of mine used to say it all the time, so I laugh every time someone says it now.
7 Three Cape Town musicians we should be following online?
Andrew: Obviously Locnville is great – you should check them out. But other than that, I’d say Jeremy Loops, Sibot and PH Fat.
Brian: Goodluck, Pascal & Pearce, PH Fat.
