Since her days in college, Tarryn Lamb of pop band Blackbyrd has had music in her soul. And with stints in the theatrical production The Kramer Petersen Songbook by David Kramer and Madame Zingara, where she was part of the Step Sisters vocal harmony group, there’s no shortage to her talents. In 2009, just ahead of the Fifa World Cup South Africa, she formed a pop band called La Vuvuzela (named after the African horn blown at football matches) along with Tamsyn Maker and Samantha Heldsinger, and although they hit it big with their tracks ‘Be Mine Tonight’ and ‘In Stereo’, the trio decided to rebrand as Blackbyrd with Tarryn writing a lot more of the songs. Here, she lets us in on why the Mother City will always be her home.
1 How does Cape Town influence your personality?
I think people from Cape Town are raised to be very friendly and it’s definitely been an influence on my own personality.
2 What’s your favourite thing about the Mother City?
There’s a very relaxed energy about Cape Town. It always feels like people here are on holiday even if they live here. It’s probably one of the main reasons we love living in this city.
3 If your friend was visiting Cape Town for the first time, where would you take them?
There’s so much to do and see in Cape Town! I’d definitely suggest going to COmpany’s Garden to feed the squirrels then head up Table Mountain.
4 Describe the city in three words.
Calm, friendly, beautiful.
5 If you were to create a souvenir that represents Cape Town, what would it be or look like?
Table Mountain is a major feature of what makes Cape Town beautiful, so I would probably make a keychain or pendant with photographs of the mountain and Sea Point Promenade.
6 What’s your favourite Cape catchphrase?
‘Awe, kom ons skit!’
