From the graffiti on the walls to sculptures in the street, Cape Town is bursting with incredible art, showcased in some on the coolest places. We are lucky to live in such a creatively-rich city that exposes us to the very best the art world has to offer.
For those of us who favour modern and contemporary art above all other categories, Everard Read is the gallery for you. As a whole, Everard Read is one of the oldest and most established galleries in the country. It first opened its doors in Johannesburg in 1913, where it grew from strength to strength. In 1996, Everard Read opened its doors in Cape Town at the V&A Waterfront, where it has become a great platform for both emerging and established artists, and an integral contributor to the city’s artistic culture.
The dynamic space of the gallery hosts some of the city’s finest exhibitions, and this year is no exception. Right now they are celebrating new works from leading artists, in their Summer in the City exhibition. For those of you who like to plan ahead, here are the forthcoming exhibitions to mark in your diary:
Wayne Barker – The World that changed the Image
3–29 February 2016
Wayne Barker is a South African artist, who lives and works in Johannesburg. With numerous solo exhibitions and group exhibitions under his belt, Barker has established himself as one South Africa’s greats. See his latest exhibition at Everard Read in February.
Cape Town Art Fair – Everard Read / CIRCA
19–21 February 2016
Everard Read will be part of this year’s Cape Town Art Fair and will present Thania Petersen Queen Colonaaiers and her Weapons of Mass Destruction in the Special Project Section dubbed Tomorrows/Today. If you want to find them they will be in the main section at Booth B7. 
Nigel Mullins – Upcoming exhibition of new works
10 March – 3 April
Working and living in Grahamstown, Nigel Mullens is best known for his diverse exploration of oil painting and stop-frame animation. Mullens has exhibited all over the world, including Scotland, England and Germany. Enjoy his new works at Everard Read later in the year.
With a great line-up of exhibitions that celebrate local artists, there is a lot to see and learn with Everard Read in 2016.
