It’s one thing reading the fascinating history of the Titanic and another thing seeing it. When you are face to face with an original porthole from the wreckage, or you look down at a pocket watch that belonged to a South African who was actually on the ship over 100 years ago, the tragedy hits you harder. For months, Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition has intrigued people who visited it. Now with a few weeks left, time is running out to see this incredible exhibition.
From the moment you enter the exhibition you are taken back to 1912, when the RMS Titanic was still above water. With your boarding pass in hand, you are taken through a chronological timeline of the ship’s history, from its construction to its untimely demise. As the name implies, you get to see genuine artifacts from the ship, as well as impressive replicas of first class rooms, third class rooms and the iceberg that brought the ship down.
You can learn numerous interesting facts about the ship, including the logistics of the disaster, from the time it sank and how long it took from the moment the ship hit the iceberg. Perhaps the most powerful part of the exhibition is its focus on personal stories of the passengers and crew. Dotted throughout the exhibition, you can learn about the people who boarded the doomed ship, who they were, what they looked like and whether they survived or not. Like Captain Edward Smith who went down with the ship; his last words were to the crew thanking them and releasing them from their service.
For those who are interested in an immersive experience, there is a Titanic Dinning Experience outside the exhibition that recreates what it was like to dine aboard the Titanic. You can enjoy third-class pub and grub or first-class fine dishes. These will be served at the Two Oceans Aquarium inside the I&J Predator tank area after a guided tour through the exhibition. Third-class cost R795 and first class cost R930. To book, email m[email protected].
The exhibition is family friendly and there is even a play zone for the children, so you can relax and enjoy the exhibition while they go off and have some fun. You can book online, or get tickets at the door. There are just three weeks left of this world class exhibition. If you haven’t seen it already, now is the time to go!
