Love Island SA premiered this year, February 2021 for the first time in the country and boy, have we been on a journey. Like all relationships, there were ups and downs along the way.

The series kicked off with nothing but backlash from viewers. Terrible filming and production saw social media catch fire with criticism. The first episode was layered with volume inconsistencies, silent credits and a clear lack of background music.

As well as this, the show was slated for a lack of racial diversity presented onscreen. Conversation centred on critique, splashed with humour and clear in intent. “Love Island Orania”, referencing the white Afrikaner-supremacist state, began trending shortly after the first episode aired.

Considering additional criticism of the show being more suited to “Friendship Island”, a controversial rape “joke”, and questionable hosting and commentary, it’s fair to say that the show persevered to see its finale last night, Sunday 11 April, where the series winners were announced.

Eastern Cape-based couple, Thimna Shooto and Libhongo-Lethu “Libho” Geza were clear fan favourites throughout. The pair were announced winners on Sunday, taking home the R1 million cash prize, which they opted to split 50/50.

“I had already won when I picked her, this is just the icing on the cake,” said Libho after winning.

Millie Terblanche and Asad Boomgaard came in second, with Mischka Najar and Xavier Haupt in third, and Ross Marshall and Tania Kera fourth.
