The first Langa Open Streets Social Innovation Festival will showcase locals’ inventive solutions to social problems within their communities.
Open Streets
The worldwide movement, ‘Open Streets’ is all about citizens using the streets as public space. Part of Langa’s Washington Street will be closed off to cars, allowing you to explore freely. Open Streets Cape Town is a non-profit organisation working to bridge the divides of our city by creating spaces that are shared with respect.
Langa
Langa, named after Chief Langalibalele, is a township that was established in 1923. The warmth and friendliness of Langa is seen through the tourism activities such as walking tours, bed and breakfasts, and homestays. Learn more about tourist attractions such as Guga S‘thebe, the Dompass Court Museum, and the resistance campaign.
The Redbull Amaphiko Academy
Many people have genius ideas to make a difference in their communities, but don’t have the means to make it happen. The Red Bull Amaphiko Academy was created as a platform to help social entrepreneurs bump their skills and projects to the next level. Local and international social innovators and experts collaborate to provide mentorship and practical workshops during the inspiring and transformative 10-day academy.
The Academy is currently taking place in Langa until 8 November 2015 and culminates in the Social Innovation Festival where the entrepreneurs will present their exhibits and demonstrations to the public. For a hint of what to expect, check out some of the fantastic mentors.
