Throughout history, photography has been said to further the agenda of colonialism rather than acting as an impartial tool to represent an environment. It reconstructs scenes according to the viewer’s perception, portraying subjective misrepresentations of people and their cultural contexts as objective truths.
The Other Camera attempts to break the spell by way of photographing ‘the other’ according to the views they have of themselves, rather than how they are perceived by outsiders. The exhibit sees a group of South African street photographers who provide an alternate photographic viewpoint by way of documenting the daily lives of people in their own communities.
Curated by the acclaimed Paul Wineberg, The Other Camera showcases the works of Angus Gibson Collection, Ikamva Youth Project, Isolezwe Collective, Lucky Sipho Khoza, William Matlala, Bobson Sukhdeo Mohanlal, Daniel Morolong, and others. Combining documentary-styled photography with formal portraits, the exhibit is made up of works displaying diverse cultures, environments and people.
