Although cliché, there’s no better term to use than ‘sharing is caring’ when referring to good food, wine and art. And, of course, we also believe there’s no better combination. GT Ferreira, the owner of Tokara Wines, feels exactly the same and has fashioned the philosophy behind Tokara after this sentiment.
With art being such an important part of South Africa’s culture, Tokara has joined the Wine Made Art campaign, now in its 11th year, to display unique artwork, tapestries and sculptures to the public throughout various spaces at the Tokara Estate.
Marié Stander, a practicing artist and art teacher, encourages her students to play with a variety of mediums for the campaign, and the students from her school will be transforming Tokara’s signature Shiraz into live art during this year’s campaign whose theme is ‘My Fortè’.
But wine art isn’t as simple as we think. It takes a lot to translate the burgundy of wine onto the canvas. Marié and her students have experimented a lot and, to their luck, have discovered an old Voortrekker ink recipe that’s perfect for the job. The process involves boiling the wine with a rusty nail and white Protea leaf, creating a vivid burgundy hue that’s as good as paint.
To see more amazing artworks byMarié and her students, and to learn about the process of turning wine into art, take a trip to Tokara for an experience meant to be shared.
