What South Africans are calling “the Woolies water challenge”, first born when a group of students created a hilarious video depicting how water from Woolworths “changed their accents”, is taking social media by storm and inspiring locals everywhere to put their own spin on the challenge.

On March 10 2019, a Twitter user who calls himself Oom Sinkila uploaded the video that started it all, gaining 16 000 likes and 6 400 retweets and 731 comments.

Rumor has it that there may even be a collaboration between Woolworths and the group that started the viral trend in future.

Since then the Woolworths challenge has become wildly popular, with one of the most well-known being called the Woolworths reverse challenge. This particular video was made by Blake Dell.

In the video Dell comes to Woolworths to experience the power of the water himself and, after buying it and drinking it, switches over from his normal accent to speaking isiZulu.

Dell says, “Yho! Kanti amanzi lawa kanti anjani? Yho ngathi ngizokhetha umfazi omnyama ke, ngizokhipha ilobolo yami ke.” This translates to “What’s with the powers in this water? I just might get myself a black wife, I will pay my lobola.”

Besides Dell, there are other locals giving the ‘magical’ Woolworths water a try:
