Back in the day, before smartphones took over, the height of any gathering in my family happened when we broke out the games. We played heated rounds of Scrabble, Cluedo, cards or 30 Seconds. Brother turned on brother, daughters betrayed mothers all in the pursuit of board game victory!
In fact, the only time the kids and adult got together at these gatherings was to play games. It really brought us together and resulted in some of my favourite memories. Boardgames have the uncanny ability to bring people together. You laugh, cry, scream and try to outsmart each other, but you always have a ton of fun doing it! That’s why to me, The Big Box Café may be the most social/fun place ever.
As Cape Town’s first dedicated boardgame café, you can grab a group of friends, head on over and just get stuck into an awesome game. They have a great variety of games both young and old can enjoy. There are card games, dice games, wooden games, strategy games, solo games, quick games and family games. There are even a couple of imported games you may not have seen before.
They offer light meals that include crepes, sandwiches and salads that will help fuel you while you dominate the game board. While anyone can enjoy a game over a meal or a drink, kids will particularly love it. They will have an absolute blast playing the various games. You can have your child’s birthday party at The Big Box Café, where they can challenge their friends to a tournament of quick games that will certainly get their brains buzzing.
Not only are boardgames a ton of fun, they are also extremely educational. The Big Box Café can assist teachers who want to bring some fun into the classroom. They can help teachers choose games on the basis of age and what they want to stimulate; imagination, vocabulary, logic, colours, calculation or spatial representation.
Education through gaming is something that The Big Box Café takes very seriously. They recognise the important role games can play in a child’s development, not only with nurturing the skills mentioned above, but with social skills as well. This is why five percent of their income is allocated to buy new board games for schools and orphanages. So when you go and play at the café, you are contributing to this initiative.
If you discovered a game at the café that you absolutely love, you can buy it there or on their online store. They also host a number of events that will take your game night to another level. Whether you want to blow off some steam with a solo game, or prove you are the best by challenging your family and friends to a tournament, The Big Box Café is a great place to go and play.
