The man of the moment deserves to get the royal treatment this Father’s Day weekend and the magnificent setting of the De Hoop Nature Reserve will tick all the boxes.
Only a three-hour drive from Cape Town, De Hoop boasts spectacular wildlife, diverse flora and fauna and is a popular spot for hikers, cyclists, bird and whale-watchers. Dad, along with the whole family can enjoy an itinerary of activities on Friday 16th June as well as Saturday 17th June.
Start the morning off with a guided bird walk along the Vlei, discovering amazing birds and fynbos before embarking on a breath-taking boat cruise at 11 am. Replenish with a late breakfast of tea, coffee and delicious pastries while you take in the views and cruise down the water.
At midday, there’s another guided tour of the Koppie Alleen, where you can explore fascinating rock pools. To make it extra special, order a picnic basket to indulge in on the dunes and watch as the Southern Right Whales make an appearance from time to time.
If you still have the energy at 4.30 pm, hop on to a late afternoon bike ride through the Bontebok and Eland to Dronkvlei. If you’re on the fence after a tiring day, maybe the hot chocolate and cookies reward can convince to partake in one more adventure?
However, if you’re giving this a miss then there are still more options to occupy your evening. Birkenhead Brewery is offering Dad a complimentary beer-tasting at 4.30 pm and then, head to the Boma for dinner around the campfire. The marvellous menu will definitely hit the spot after you’ve worked up an appetite. Tuck into a hearty leek and courgette soup, followed by a lamb potjie and savoury rice, served with roasted vegetables and Greek salad.
For dessert, SA’s favourite winter comfort food of pumpkin fritters and Cape Brandy Pudding will be served with a rooibos custard. The sweet treats don’t stop there though, as there will be smores around the fire well into the evening.
If you’re don’t want to spend the weekend, a special Father’s Day lunch will be served on Sunday with a tweaked menu yet just as delicious. Spoil your favourite man with an adventurous day out that he’ll reminisce on for years to come.
