The Easter Bunny will be hopping into town on April 4 this year. The festive weekend is celebrated widely across the country as a special time to come together with family and friends. Indulgence lies at the core, with Beacon’s Marshmallow Eggs being a firm favourite over the years. Can you really call it Easter without them, actually?
Beacon’s chocolate-covered delights have been described by makers as “an iconic South African tradition.” According to Business Insider SA, the eggs are currently selling at what retailers charged in 2019.
Don’t put all your eggs in one basket, though.
Beacon have introduced smaller boxes of eggs, selling for not much less than the bigger boxes used to. You’ll now be getting a dozen eggs less per box, at around R2 per egg.
This year, you can expect 36 eggs per box, compared to last years 48. Essentially, this means you’ll be paying more per individual egg.
Keen to mix things up with custard and strawberry flavoured variants? Expect just 24 eggs per box. With the big generic versions coming in at 30 eggs per box, making comparisons become even more difficult to track.
The difference between the cheapest and most expensive price per Easter egg fairs at around 80%.
Where you buy your goodies from should come with a fair warning. If you’re not careful, you could end up paying 60% more than you should.
Old faithful Makro are offering up their eggs at below R2 per egg – the cheapest deal around town. Shoprite, on the other hand, are ripping the ringer out of things, charging up to R3.50 per egg – 17% more than the exact same product sold at Checkers.
Compared to Pick ‘n Pay and Clicks, Shoprite maxes out at at nearly 60% more per egg.
