It seems like traffic starts as early as 3pm from the Cape Town CDB. If you leave anytime after 3.30 pm, you can be sure to be stuck in traffic for at least an hour if you’re commuting to either the Southern Suburbs (M5), Northern Suburbs (N1) or Cape Flats area (N2).
What do you do for that hour or more? It’s illegal to text and drive, and certainly playing Candy Crush is a ‘no-no’, but it’s fine in Parliament (apparently or so we’ve seen), just not for traffic. Buckle up, and keep your eyes on the road.
Whether you’re car-pooling, commuting alone, doing the school run or with just riding solo, put the phone away and have some fun.
Here are a few traffic games:
Last word, first-word song
One person starts singing a chorus or few lines of a song, and whatever word the person ends with the next person must start their song with that word. Example:
Person 1: (Beyonce’s Irreplaceable)
Everything you own in the box to the left
In the closet that’s my stuff, yes
If I bought it please don’t touch
Person 2: (Mariah Carey’s Touch my body)
Touch my body
Put me on the floor
Wrestle me around
Play with me some more
Touch my body
Next person: Body Language, Queen)
Body language, body language, yeah
Sexy body, sexy, sexy body
I want your body
Baby you’re hot
Body language body language body language
Body language body language body language
Body language body language body language
You continue this game until everyone is eliminated for singing the wrong lyrics.
Add up the numbers on the number plates
This a great game with kids. It’s a fun Math game. Get them to add up all the numbers on the number plate. One person can call out a car and everyone must try and add up. The first person to shout it out gets a point.
Alphabet eye spy
Each person gets a chance to call out something they see in alphabetical order.
Example:
Player 1: Audi
Player 2: Bridge
Player 3: Cars….etc.
Karaoke Car Pool
Choose a song on the radio or any random song on a playlist and just sing to it.
Tell Yo’ Mama Jokes
Each person makes up a ‘Yo’ Mama’ joke, but the aim of the game is for the rest of the commuters not to laugh. Try and keep a serious face while the person tells a joke.
Hum a song
Hum a song and let the others guess the title of the song. Whoever guesses it correctly gets a turn to hum a song.
Count the colour cars
Great for kids. Each child/person chooses a colour (excludes white and silver) and counts the number of cars they see with that colour. They have to point to that car and call it out.
ABC Backwards
If you’re alone or with passengers, see how many of you can say the alphabet backward.
Beatbox
See how many non-verbal (non-linguistic) noises you can make with your mouth, or try to beatbox.
Sing with an accent
Try and sing the songs on the radio, or your favourite songs in different accents.
