Heritage Day, the day South Africans celebrate our rich and vibrant history, is near. And although the tradition is to partake in all things braai, why not add some sweetness to the day with one of these delicious ideas – including one that doesn’t require you to bake at all?

1 When life gives you lemons…

Make lemon curd the South African way: with condensed milk. Jandri van Zyl, owner and pastry chef at The Velvet Cake Co in Loop Street, recommends using three tins of condensed milk and real lemon juice to balance the sweet and sour taste of the curd. Add it to the top of a cake then scorch it with a blowtorch for a lovely effect.

Standing around the fire forms a big part of a Capetonian’s Heritage Day. So grab some marshmallows and Marie biscuits, and get the kids to make their own s’mores – yum!

3 Modern classics

Known for its assortment of glorious confectionery treats, The Velvet Cake Co have added special Heritage Day items to their menu, including a classic milk tart cake, priced from R350, that will go down well after your braai. If you’re in the mood for something even sweeter, turn it up a notch with the Koeksister cupcakes and jam tarts with a twist (R22 each).
