It’s close enough to the weekend that you can start thinking about where your next hangover is coming from. And while most would say José is just the man to get the party started, we challenge you to level up your agave game at one of these spots. Just watch out for the gusano…
Cabrito
The sister establishment to El Burro just upstairs, Cabrito offers patrons an impressive selection of local and imported tequila and mescal – and, of course, margaritas. The cocktail and snack menus echo old favourites from El Burro, but the idea here is a more sedate venue to get your drink on, with occasional live music spots. Try the Don Julio 1942 Tequila Anejo, if you’re feeling flush.

San Julian Taco & Tequila
The only Mexican-family-run eatery in the city, San Julian is all about offering authentic Mexican cuisine in an unfussy setting. And what’s a more authentic accompaniment to your tacos than one of the 22 tequilas and mescals on the menu? There’s even a three-year aged Centinela for connoisseurs among the various blancos and reposados.

Aces ‘n’ Spades
Aces doesn’t have any south-of-the-border affiliation, but they’re one of few Cape Town bars-slash-clubs that are popularising mescal. At R35 a shot it’ll set you back a little more than your usual Dutch courage round of Cuervo before you hit the dance floor, but it’s worth it for the smooth, almost smoky flavour. (And not having to pull a tequila face). We highly recommend it before taking the mic at Wednesday karaoke nights.
