On Heritage Day, South Africans honour our cultures, traditions,  languages – and a good braai!  Whether you know it as ‘shisa nyama’, braai or barbeque, here are five places to set up your fire and get those steaks grilling this 24 September.

1 Middelvlei Wine Estate, Stellenbosch

For an authentic South Africa flavour, Middlevlei allows you to bring along your own goodies to enjoy on their charming farm. Boerewors? Check. Braaibroodjies? Check. Cooler box filled with local beer? Check and check! Now you’re ready for a true Boer-inspired braai.

 

2 Buffels Bay, Cape Point

With individual and circular braai spots for all sizes of gatherings, Buffels Bay promises a fantastic Braai Day. Do a drive-by to take in the sea breeze while you reminisce family stories of years gone by before getting down to the real business – of braaiing, that is.

3 Storms River Mouth, Tsitsikamma National Park

With 10 braai spots and the sound of crashing waves, Storms River Mouth offers a great spot to get the extended family together for a big hurrah. If you’re lucky, you may even spot some southern right whales – a real treat for the kids!

 

 

4 Oudtshoorn, Karoo

Ever had an ostrich braai? No? Then you’re missing out on something special. Head over to the ostrich farm in Oudtshoorn where the friendly staff will even prepare the ostrich meat for you. Not sold on grilling an ostrich? They also offer yummy lamb potjies.lovely guesthouse with units that provide common areas and braai spots.

 

5 Langebaan, West Coast

Something smells fishy! Langebaan is the perfect place to host a fish braai, complete with crayfish, mussels and freshly baked bread.  The local music played outside by devoted, funky local guitar artists will keep the party going all night long.
