The only thing better than having wine on a beautiful estate is enjoying it with a perfect food pairing. Not only does it enhance the flavour of the wine, it’s a great way to get exposed to interesting combinations. While we’re all familiar (and enjoy) cheese and chocolate wine pairings, there are some other unique options to try.
1 Ice cream at Clos Malverne
Those with an adventurous sweet tooth will love the ice creaming pairing at Clos Malverne. Located in the less-frequented part of Stellenbosch, you get to try an interesting array of ice cream flavours with the estate’s wine. Think passion fruit, chilli and coconut ice-cream matched with the estate’s Sauvignon Blanc Brut. Other delicious ice cream flavours you can expect include strawberry and rosemary meringue, vanilla shortbread and gooseberry, and sweet potato and dill.

2 Tapas at Rupert Rothschild
Taste some of Rupert Rothschild flagship wines with mouth-watering tapas. Head chef Carmen Muller has created scrumptious dishes that are the perfect accompaniment to the wine. You can look forward to lightly battered Kingklip fritter with Romesco Sauce, cloudy pear-braised pork belly on a bed of crunchy Brussel sprout, fennel and apple slaw salad, and Karoo lamb shoulder with a potato fondant and glazed carrots – each paired with a different wine.

3 Nougat and MCC at Villieria
While most farms start off with bubbly or have it has an optional extra, Villieria has a whole tasting centred around bubbly. Inspired from a fortunate placement at a food and wine show, this sweet tasting sees honey nougat packed with almonds and cranberries, Macadamia honey nougat, almond nougat and rose pink Turkish Delight paired with the farm’s different Bruts and MCCs.

Cupcakes and wine may sound a little a strang, but once you experience it, you’ll realise that it’s a match made in heaven. At Delheim Wine Estate, you can indulge in wonderful flavours of cupcakes such as pomegranate, Rooibos-infused with lemon and cream cheese, pumpkin and vanilla, and traditional Makataan with a great variety of wine including Pinotage Rosé, Chenin Blanc, Pinotage and Gewürztramine.

5.Turkish Delight at Lourensford
There are a number of tastings to try at the popular Lourensford Market, but one of the best is the Turkish Delight pairing. The different flavour profiles of the wine are taken to a whole new level with sweet treats of almond, rose, orange and ginger Turkish Delight. If your craving for sweet things is not quenched in this tasting, you can do a chocolate pairing afterwards.
