When it come to the Cape culinary scene, Chris von Ulmenstein has her finger on the pulse. Not only does she know about all the best chefs, places and dishes, she shares her wisdom with us through her tourism site Whale Tales Blog. We chatted to Chris to find out what she loves about the Mother City.
1 How does Cape Town influence your work?
I mainly write about restaurants in Cape Town and the Winelands. As the restaurant capital of South Africa, Cape Town offers me an abundant plate of writing opportunity.
2 What do you love most about this city?
The beauty of Cape Town is the best in the world. It makes me happy. The people are friendly and there are so many good restaurants and so much healthy produce to buy.
3 If your friend was visiting Cape Town for the first time, where would you take them first?
My friends would know that I am a food fan so after going up Table Mountain, we’d go to the Oranjezicht Urban Farm then to its market on a Saturday. I’d take my friend to my favourite restaurants Villa 47, Giulio’s Café, La Colombe and Benguela on Main. Then we’ll go dancing on a Sunday afternoon at Constantia Nek!
4 Describe the city in three words.
World-class cuisine capital.
5 If you were to create a souvenir that represents Cape Town, what would it be or look like?
It would be a beautiful blue plate with a logo which includes Table Mountain, a bottle of bubbly and food ingredients.
6 What’s your favourite Cape catchphrase?
‘Cape Town cosmopolitan cuisine city,’
