Walking into Makaron Restaurant at Majeka House & Spa in Stellenbosch is like walking into a Garden of Eden. Beautiful green lawns, bright royal blue loungers and bar stools surrounded by prickly green cacti. A magnificent water fountain and a pretty flower arch. All these elements add to the relaxing environment while you await your Sunday roast.

The Garden of Eden is not the only area that guests can lounge in. The Makaron Restaurant has amazing decor, which transforms this guest house into a top-class boutique. The guest house has an incredible bar area, which completely blew my mind as I walked through the door. The bar area resembles the study of a an important businessman in an old-time movie.

Patterned carpets, suede furniture, a massive model of a boat that no one knows the name of and marvellous silver dome-like chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. All that was missing was a dark wood desk and one of those leather office chairs that you can twirl around in. I ordered a Shirley Temple and tweeted away because I wanted everyone to get a glimpse of this incredible space.

I made my way into the dining area of the restaurant. I was greeted by waiters and waitresses dressed very smartly with smiles on their faces. The dining area is spacious with glass windows all around, so guests can enjoy the lovely view. The decor is modern with wooden tables and clear perspex chairs. There are a few velvet old-school chairs and curtains to add to the vintage feel of the restaurant.

By the time the food arrived, my stomach was smiling. Peter Goffe-Wood and Head Chef Lucas Carstens have surely outdone themselves with a delicious menu. First, bread was served: bread sticks, mini vetkoek and more, served with unsalted butter, hummus and butternut spread. Yum! At Makaron, family values are very important. All the dishes are served in a family-style way with big dishes and guests can share and dish hearty portions for themselves.

The food is best described as comfort food and all main meals are served with three sides dishes. A generous portion of succulent lamb was served with gravy, duck fat potatoes, salad greens and julienne carrots. Makaron’s Sunday roasts are ever-changing, with a different roast served each week.

Sommelier Esmé Groenewald provides guests with a wine list from Stellenbosch vineyards to pair with the roast. She also makes her way to your table and explains the history of the wines and what it is best served with.

Eat outside in the Garden of Eden, in the savvy bar area or inside the dining hall. Either way, your Makaron Restaurant experience will be blissful and an experience for the whole family.
