With the craft beer scene in Cape Town experiencing such exponential growth, it’s a joy to see the first of its kind here emerge – the first black-owned microbrewery.
Ukhamba Beerworx opens its doors laters this week and will bring together world-class brewing methods coupled with the rich culture of the Nguni people. Beer has long been a part of this way of life – ‘umqombothi’ has been served for generation upon generation in the ‘ukhamba’ – a clay pot used for serving this proudly South African brew. Long before the explosion of craft beer across the world, umqombothi was served and enjoyed as a proud tradition by friends and strangers alike.
It is this aspect of beer, speaking in a South African context, where Ukhamba Beerworx was born. Cape Town’s first black-owned microbrewery have been refining three brews which are now ready to make their debut to the world, these being the Pursuit of Hoppyness, a Black IPA, then the State Capture, a standard IPA, and finally the Utywala, a Saison beer.
Ukhamba’s vibrant branding and quality brewing methods reflect an authentic African culture, right from its eye-catching design to that last sip at the end of the bottle. Located in Woodstock, the microbrewery officially opens its doors this week and are inviting the public to join them for their grand opening – taking place at The Palms Lifestyle Centre this Saturday, July 29th, at 5pm. Guests will be able to taste this new and exciting contender’s range of craft beers as well as indulge in some hearty African-themed cuisine provided by Mnganam Foods & Catering.
