Catharina’s Restaurant in Steenberg has a new chef and a new menu. Both these are to match the restaurant’s updated ‘contemporary heritage’ feel. To honour the founder of the restaurant (Catharina Ras), chef Archie Maclean creates a sensory experience to show-off her feisty nature.
Chef Archie started his culinary journey as an apprentice to a Michelin star chef. He is no stranger to creating new, exciting dishes. ‘When I started delving into the life of Catharina Ras, I just knew I had to include ingredients she would have served at her own table’, he says.
His menu includes gamey dishes of crocodile tail and zebra loin. Chef Archie’s wish is to take people out of their comfort zones. He wants them to experience a new dining experience at Catharina’s restaurant.
The fresh, indigenous ingredients used in the food are ones Catharina would hunt and grow herself. This all adds to the ‘contemporary heritage’ culinary experience. Catharina’s Restaurant embraces the past, but evolves with the times.
Catharina’s offers you a 3-course à la carte menu, and an eight-course tasting menu. Why not try the seared tuna wrapped in crisp salmon skin? Or the salmon trout served with a horseradish and sour fig risotto? You’ll also enjoy the tasting menu for R1 100 per person. It includes wine pairings from leading estates. If you’re not that adventurous, the menu also includes more familiar options for quick or informal dining. Both menus are available for lunch and dinner. Anyone who dines at Catharina’s must prepare to revel in the delicious tastes of the cuisine. They are open seven days a week.
