The 16th of May has officially been named World Whisky Day – a day to sip, savour and celebrate whiskies from around the world. It seems the ideal time to introduce South Africa to a premium single malt Scotch whisky…
At an event this week hosted at the elegant Café Dijon in Green Point, House of Fine Whisky at Checkers LiquorShop unveiled Glenburgie, its 16-year-old extremely rare, single-cask addition to the Private Barrel Co label. Amid a group tasting with whisky aficionados, fellow writers and influencers, we were fortunate enough to not only taste the Glenburgie, but compare it to the floral, sweet flavours of the 17-year-old BenRiach and 16-year-old Glendronach (which made me want to chew it up – it smelt like fruitcake in a glass).
An occasion to celebrate, the twice-distilled, 16-year-old Glenburgie was chosen as the newest edition of the privately bottled single cask range for Checkers. Rich and sweet, it truly is a delicious whisky to sip or drink with a drop of water. ‘We have chosen the perfect time to launch this whisky, just in time for World Whisky Day on Saturday, inviting everyone to try a dram and celebrate the water of life,’ says spokesperson for Checkers, Joseph Brönn.
OF NOTE
Glenburgie will only be on shelf in July but pre-orders for the 228 bottles available are open from 20 May via the Checkers website at a cost of R999.99 per bottle.
