Nothing prepares you for the beauty that lies on ‘the other side of the mountains’. You drive on the N1, through the Huguenot Tunnel, and emerge in an incredible setting that looks like a landscape painting. It’s here you will find the Breedekloof Wine Valley.
Despite it being an absolutely gorgeous area, Breedekloof Wine Valley’s reputation as a mass producing wine region has given people the wrong perception. They feel it is a place of quantity rather than quality, and pass right by on their way to other places. We were given the opportunity to stop and experience the Breedekloof first hand, and I don’t mind telling you that by the end of the trip, my perceptions of the valley had completely shifted.
While it is true that the region does produce lots of wine (the Botha Cellar produces 30 million litres of wine alone), there are many smaller boutique wine farms too. Over and above that, the region has excellent winemakers who produce absolutely exceptional wine. Need proof? Collectively, the region has won an impressive number of accolades in local and international competitions. I tasted one award-winning wine after the other, and it was absolutely astounding.
To recognise this benchmark year for the Breedekloof Wine Valley, they are having Celebration Month. From 15 November to 17 December 2016, each winery in the valley will host a range of activities. You can look forward to picnics, food pairings, tastings (including craft beer and gin), lucky draws and much more.
Just one day in the valley is all it takes to fall in love with the area. The people are warm and welcoming. Whether you are enjoying a tasting, touring a cellar or spending a night in a guesthouse, you will feel comfortable and at ease. You can’t help but get swept up by the fresh air and stunning scenery, especially when you are enjoying an exceptional glass of wine made from the valley.
With most of the farms being run by third-, fourth- and even fifth-generation winemakers, there is a strong emphasis on family heritage and tradition. The people are proud of their community and do whatever they can to uplift each other up. When you are in the valley, you feel like you are part of the community. The best part? It is only an hour away from Cape Town. So go on, head to the Breedekloof Wine Valley and celebrate with them. They are waiting with open arms.
