UPDATE: SINCE THE RELEASE OF THIS ARTICLE, IT HAS BEEN DISCOVERED THAT THE NUNNERY IS STILL ASSOCIATED WITH ILLICIT ACTIVITIES. READ THE FULL STORY ON 2OCEANSVIBE.
Number 207 Bree Street has a controversial history, but The Nunnery is looking to turn that around. Since they’ve taken ownership, the lights have changed from red to blue, and they’ve joined the trending Upper Bree community. This newish eatery and bar on the Upper Bree restaurant strip is tucked in next to Palma, down the road and opposite Arcade.
The Nunnery got its name from business partner, Mr Nunn’s name combined with ‘brewery’. Images of nuns and nun puns feature throughout the branding and décor as a sneaky reminder that if you’re naughty, all will be forgiven.
When I ate at The Nunnery recently, I was impressed by the generous portion sizes and reasonable prices. Head Chef, Antonio, is utilising his years of experience working abroad to develop a new menu which will feature sushi, Thai dishes, and exciting fusion cuisine. You can also look out for pizza delivery in the future.
They boast a well-stocked bar, with craft beers, wine, speciality cocktails and shooters. Their cocktails are hot on the list and will impress even staunch cocktail snobs. Don’t expect cordial mixed with spirits; they source fresh juice pulp from a local supplier to create refreshing slushies, margaritas, daiquiris and more.
Karaoke in the city is on the rise, and you can get your fix at The Nunnery every night except Saturday. Imagine – belting out your favourite tunes and taking Upper Bree by storm. There is an outdoor monitor, and another in the spacious interior.
Just for fun, their menu currently features a ‘Being Naughty’ section, where you can get a spank from the waitress for R50 or give a spanking from R100. This offering will only be around for another short while, so if this floats your boat, take advantage.
They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner all day from 7 am – 10 pm. The bar stays open late, and only close when the last customer leaves.
The enthusiastic, high energy staff are eager to show you a good time, so head down to cheeky spot, The Nunnery, your new habit, for a little bit of spice.

Nunnery : Hell Hole of Human Misery
What a joke you have featured The Nunnery – an operating brothel (they have 6 rooms) that regularly has drugged, lethargic, crying girls outside on the kerb. It is an absolute blight on the Bree St landscape showcasing human trafficking at its finest. I work nearby and have had to see this misery on a regular basis. Please open your eyes and remove this revolting venue from your site or, at the very least describe it truthfully for the human hellhole it is.
