It started out as a deli where you could make your own sandwiches. Today, Saucisse Boutique Deli has evolved into a fantastic breakfast and lunch spot, with a delectable menu, environmentally conscious business practices and an incredible selection of locally sourced products.
Walking it to Saucisse is like walking into a big family farm kitchen. There is fresh produce all over, comfy chairs and quirky tables featuring old recipes. This is exactly the what chef-patron Amanda Lewis wanted to achieve. Inspired by the hands-on, family-run boulangeries and charcuteries of France and Italy, Amanda opened Saucisse Deli at The Old Biscuit Mill six years ago. It is still going strong and it’s easy to see why.
There is an amazing selection of meats, cheeses, breads and treats. You can peruse through the deli and choose what you want to make a custom sandwich, wrap, salad or platter. If you are vegetarian or vegan, don’t let the prominent displays of meat and cheese put you off. Saucisse has a variety of vegan-friendly substitutes. The best part? Amanda does not charge extra for these!
For those who are intimidated by all the choices, there is a lovely menu (a recent addition to the deli) featuring customer favourites. This convinced me to select my breakfast from the menu. I had a breakfast bowl, and it was honestly the best breakfast I have ever had. Basil, scrambled egg with spinach, crispy bacon, toasted mozzarella and the tastiest roasted cherry tomatoes, all bursting with flavour.
Amanda adores breakfast, so she makes sure that the ones she serves are top notch. If you work in Woodstock and don’t have time to sit down at Saucisse, but still really want it for lunch, you can order ahead online and pop into the store to collect it. But, if you have some time, I do recommend you sit down to enjoy a meal.
The space is so homely and comfortable. The family feel is enhanced by old photographs, article clippings and Derrick, Amanda’s wonderful father, who is a perfect host and extremely proud of his daughter.
To me, Saucisse’s greatest achievement is how environmentally conscious they are. After running a green kitchen for one of Greep Pop’s projects, Amanda completely changed her business practice. There is no food wastage. Instead, Saucisse donates food to the Haven Night Shelter in Observatory. All products are locally sourced and free range. Recycling is a must and Amanda drops it off herself. Even their menus and packaging are biodegradable.
With its quirky style, incredibly delicious and wholesome food, and wonderful patrons, Saucisse Boutique Deli is a fantastic breakfast and brunch spot. It offers guilt free indulgence on all fronts.
