A very special batch of limited edition beer will soon be available, courtesy of Woodstock-based Drifter Brewing Company.
The beer, a classic Belgian-style tripel, is the first in a series of underwater beers brewed by owner Nick Bush and the Drifter team. While diving at the site of an old shipwreck at Smitswinkel Bay off Cape Point, Nick was inspired by the darkness and cold temperatures, realizing that these conditions would be ideal for a unique fermentation process. In 2016 he returned to the location with a few crates to let them age on the seabed.
Now, over a year later, the crates have been retrieved from the ocean and the results are reportedly spectacular. Hints of banana and citrus are prevalent in the underwater brew.
Drifter Brewing Company is a jewel in the crown of Cape Town’s craft beer offering. Started in early 2015, the nautical-themed brewery symbolises creativity, adventure and craftsmanship.
Only a few bottles of the special edition ocean brew will be available, and those interested may join the waiting list to get a taste of what is potentially Cape Town’s most exciting – and different – beer offering to date.
