The Hungry Herbivore is a small, innovative outlet that provides delicious, clean and honest comfort food, rich in nutrients.

The Hungry Herbivore started out in January 2014 as a small food stand, operating at markets across Cape Town. They have since grown to a permanent full-time outlet at the V&A Food Market at the Waterfront. The Hungry Herbivore specialises in tasty raw, vegan and gluten-free pizza, desserts and snacks.

Founders, Amy and Brent, began their wellness journey while living abroad. They soon realised that deep fried foods, too much meat and starch were not promoting good health. They explored new recipes and ingredients and learned to love eating more plant-based, clean and nutritious food.

In addition to discovering many new foods and flavours, after living overseas for two and half years, they also became aware of the high levels of artificial ingredients that were present in processed foods. Like most of us, they never bothered to read any food labels and didn’t put much thought into food – as long as it tasted good.

When they returned to South Africa, they started The Hungry Herbivore, with just the two of them preparing everything. Only a year later, they grew to a permanent, seven days per week, 363 days a year outlet with employees. They also started a small retail line of products and have a list of regular suppliers.

All their food is natural and has undergone little to no processing. It’s uncooked (not heated to more than 46 degrees Celsius,) and free of colourants and preservatives. All products are completely vegan and plant-based, as they don’t use animal products, which also means that everything is dairy-free. To the best of their knowledge, their products are wheat and gluten-free too because they use nut, seed, and fruit flours instead of regular flours.

Head to The Hungry Herbivore to get your health fix. Their desserts are so delicious that you wouldn’t guess they were any healthier than traditional sweet treats.
