The gastropub is a relatively new trend in the world of eating out (the term was coined in the early ’90s). But its probably one of the most appreciated. Pubs are cosy havens where you can catch up with friends, watch the game, and grab a few pints. But when you add great food into the mix…that’s when a pub becomes paradise (take it from someone who frequented Grahamstown’s famous Rat and Parrot.) If you’re in Cape Town, and in need of some comfort food to go with your sundowner, then head to one of these gems.

The Odyssey Gastropub, CBD

pubs

With its rustic interior and wholesome collection of eats, The Odyssey might just feel like home away from home. It’s varied collection of nibbles, vegetarian options and mouthwatering burgers (which can come gluten-free if you so choose) all make it welcoming to a great number of patrons. Check out The Odyssey’s menu here, and make sure you come grab a bite when live music is on.

Firemans Arms, De Waterkant

pubs

Any pub established as early as 1864 HAS to be visited. That being said, it’s not just Fireman Arms’s longevity that makes it a must. It’s menu boasts varied and, in some cases, rather exotic dishes. Oxtripe curry anyone? And with pizzas, homemade soups, pies and classic dishes such as Bangers and Mash, Shepherds’ Pie and Steak, Egg & Chips, you’ll feel more than a little sated after an evening at Fireman Arms. Quiz lovers and avid sports watchers should also take note of quiz nights and match screenings, all listed on their website.

Ferrymans Tavern, V&A Waterfront

pubs

There’s also a bit of history where Ferrymans is concerned. Being the Waterfront’s first ever tenant, this restaurant and bar has stood its ground while a massive commercial hub has developed around it. Unsurprising really, considering it’s a family-friendly establishment that boasts a play-area, a menu for the kiddies, breakfasts, seafood,  pub grills, gourmet burgers and ‘tavern favourites’. And with four signature sangrias, plus its very own ale, Ferrymans is sure to stay right where it is for a considerable length of time.

The Happy Oak, Stellenbosch

pubsOnly in a town like Stellenbosch will you find a place like The Happy Oak. It’s a great spot where friends can hang out, and lunch or sup on some wholesome comfort food. It’s also where you might spot a friendly face or two, and sit down for an impromptu draught or cocktail and a basket of tasty bites. The Happy Oak also has its fair share of specials, so there’s the high chance of ending the night will a full belly whenever you pay a visit.

pubs

Combine yummy food, an expansive interior, and an outdoor space that offers beautiful views of Cape Town, and you have your dining experience at The River Club’s Slug & Lettuce. It’s menu features everything from tapas to pizza, and includes kosher, halaal and vegetarian options. The perfect place for anyone to spend an evening with mates, or a weekend with the family.
