Yes, National Milk Tart Day is a thing. And yes, we’ll be using it as an excuse to stuff ourselves with milk tart goodness. Not only does this day celebrate this proudly South African dessert, it also celebrates those proudly SA family moments. Whether it’s sharing milk tart at the family braai or making it with your grandmother in the kitchen, if you’re South African, chances are you probably have a memory that involves milk tart.
National Milk Tart Day was first started in 2013 by Weg magazine in collaboration with Ladysmith Botter. The aim of the day is to create recognition for this relatively affordable but tasty dessert. And the Velvet Cake Co is honouring it in the best way possible: by serving up delicious milk tart cupcakes that put a twist on the traditional treat. Think moist cinnamon sponge and milk tart filling – and for only R20 nogal! The cupcakes will be available at both their stores in Bellville and Cape Town CBD.
For those who like to make milk tart, the global pioneer in frozen convenience baking Deeghuys has also been running a competition to find the best recipe in the country. The winner of the competition will have their milk tart recipe sold in all Deeghuys stores countrywide and will receive naming rights and royalties for every tart purchased. Two semi-final events were held in Pretoria and Cape Town on 25 February with 10 semi-finalists in each region required to present their tarts, to judges for tasting. Four finalists will then be invited to a black tie ‘bake-off’ to be held in Cape Town on 16 March where the ultimate milk tart champion for 2017 will be crowned.
So whether you make or buy, be sure to sink your teeth into a yummy slice of milk tart today!
