There’s nothing like enjoying a meal during summer in Cape Town. The sun shines for much longer, the views are crystal clear and the energy of the city is alive and buzzing. One of the best places to take all this in is Mondiall, at the V&A Waterfront. Not only is it in the heart of one of the city’s most famous tourist attractions, but they have also just released their new summer menu.
Sitting in the exquisite restaurant, you’ll experience a magnificent view of Table Mountain that simply makes you feel easy and at peace. While the restaurant is more up-market, it is not fine dining, so you can kick back and relax while you enjoy your meal. Recently, Mondiall celebrated their third birthday, and in all that time, their appeal has grown. This is thanks to Head Chef Stephen Mandes, who has perfected the Mondiall favourites and introduced some exciting new dishes.
Now that the days are warmer, Mondiall has done away with their hearty autumn menu. Their summer menu features yummy, lighter meals that are bursting with flavour and more suited to the weather. As always, the menu has their famous fish tacos and Wagyu cheeseburger, which are insanely delicious!
For starters, you can have seafood ceviche with crisp tacos, Mediterranean vegetable moussaka and my personal favorite: prawn and leek roulade. The mains include everything from red meat, fish, chicken and veg. Popular choices on our table were the oven-baked kingklip and BBQ baby chicken. Alex, our enthusiastic waiter, informed us that South African and Argentina are the only places in the world you can catch kingklip. At Mondiall, it is prepared with a bacon and butter ragout with a parsley crust.
Chef Mandes is a former Ultimate Braai Master winner, so you know his BBQ baby chicken will be on point. It is served with fresh coleslaw and potato aioli. I opted for the organic lamb duo, with shaved vegetables and mint jus. It was perfection. The meat was soft and tender, the veggies fresh and cool (exactly what you need on a hot day) and there were no carbs in sight, so those on a health tip can indulge (almost) guilt-free.
The desserts are just spectacular. No matter how full you are, you will find space for the sweet treats on offer. There is a lovely rooibos-and-honey crème brûlée, a deconstructed lime meringue, a brownie with berries, and the most amazing peppermint crisp.
Whether you want to go for a long leisurely lunch or fancy a nice dinner out, Mondiall should be on the top of your list this summer!
