It’s 9 am on a Thursday and the parking lot at Peregrine Farm Stall is full. There are no special events taking place, schools are back at it and yet we have to circle twice before finding a spot. This is a testament to how popular Peregrine really is. Located on the N2 between Cape Town and the Garden Route, Peregrine Farm Stall has been a great place to make a pit stop since 1964.

Divided into areas that fulfil different needs, you’ll find a traditional farm stall for all your road trip essentials, a café to sit down and enjoy a meal, a bakery filled with treats, an outdoor stall for a quick bite, a playground for the kids to stretch their legs and a few pop-up stores. Wow!

We started things off at the café where we met with co-owner Muriel Burls. Sitting down, a fresh-pressed apple juice in hand (an indication of the huge apple industry of Elgin), Muriel lets us in on the Peregrine history. Although it’s been around since the Sixties, it’s only been in Muriel’s family for the past 20 years. Through the Burl family’s leadership, the stall has grown from strength to strength and has become a good source of employment in the Elgin Valley. Muriel also believes its popularity is a direct result of the good quality of service and products offered at Peregrine.

‘Our pies and quiches are very popular, and our small range of regular produce is prepared fresh every day. We do large family-size quiches and frozen pies that people can take home to enjoy, and also cater for all different dietary requirements,’ she says.

Another example of Peregrine’s commitment to quality and giving back? A lot of their fresh ingredients is sourced from the valley to help support and uplift it. Not only is their foodstuff diverse, but no matter what you sink your teeth into, you’ll be met with flavourful tastes and good portions. From home-made hummus, tzatziki, roasted veggies, fresh ciabatta and jam tarts to coffee, gourmet milkshakes and their latest offering, an exquisite range of fresh-pressed juice.

The fresh -pressed apple juice is one of the best-selling items at Peregrine and the fact that it has no preservatives or sweeteners makes it even more appealing. The juice is also used in all the other fresh-pressed juice varietals and you can choose from the likes of Green of Hearts, Spiced Rooibos Apple, Elgin Sunshine, Tooty Rooty and Cucumber Lemonade.

So whether you;re in the mood to sit down and enjoy a long leisurely meal or need a quick grab-and-go snack, Peregrine Farm Stall is a must stop on any road trip up the Garden Route.
