Cape Town is rich in exquisite wines, exceptional cuisine and outstanding art. All three elements merged this past Friday evening at Harveys at Winchester Mansions as guests went on a journey of grapes, gourmet and gallery.

Hosted on the first Friday of every month, the 3G evenings commence with an art exhibition by a local artist and build up to a delectable five-course meal presented by Sous Chef Justin May, inclusive of a glass of wine per course. Each evening boasts wine from a different wine farm with March paying homage to Stellenbosch’s DeWaal Wines. Opening the sensuous evening was the aesthetically pleasing work of Lucie De Moyencourt who captures the city of Cape Town from her artistic point of view. ‘My art is a pure reflection of my surroundings,’ she says of her work.

Simple, understated and delectably easy on the palate, each course was a beautiful contradiction to the next. Seared salmon served with chive, lime and citrus mascarpone parfait debuted the gourmet part of the evening paired with Sauvignon Blanc 2016. In true Cape gourmet style, a Cape Malay marinated Kingklip was served next, complemented by the DeWaal Young Vines Merlot 2014.

As a beef fillet fanatic, the lazy aged beef fillet main course accompanied by buttered asparagus, grilled shallots, roasted cherry tomatoes and a chocolate chilli steak sauce didn’t disappoint. The beef was tender while the chocolate chilli added a touch of spicy sweetness. The dish was rounded off well with Cabernet Sauvignon that helped smooth out the beef and buttered asparagus. If you like your meat soft, the usual Springbok offerings at other restaurants can end up being tough, but at Harveys, the pepper-crusted springbok with roasted baby carrots, spring onion, garlic baby potatoes and a pepper jus, paired with the Signal Rock 2014 red blend, will be your new go-to. To end off an evening of fabulous dining, wine and art, dessert presented itself as a lovely pink concoction of Turkish Delight Parfait – divine!

We’re eager to see what the next evening of grapes, gourmet and gallery has to offer.

Harvey’s is absolutely one of the top 5 restaurants in Cape Town. The food is just incredible, and the service is wonderful. I’ve been to the 3G a few times and it’s beautiful in the courtyard in summer, cosy in the hotel in winter.
