Despite competition in Simon’s Town’s eclectic restaurant scene, the newly opened Saveur has been turning heads for all the right reasons.
Overlooking the picturesque marina, Saveur offers modern European cuisine with a wide range of satisfying dishes to chose from. The decor has been tastefully chosen in varying shades of green and brown, complete with a warm fireplace for those chilly winter days, and an assortment of European-inspired knick-knackery.
The menu features the usual hunger-busting suspects – think meaty gourmet burgers stacked with tasty accompaniments, quality wraps and fresh hake and chips – but also includes a couple of Saveur’s signature dishes.
As someone who generally opts for a traditional meal, I decided to get out of my comfort zone by experimenting with more ‘adventurous’ food. A baked brie and a grilled country bread stack was the chosen upon starter, where a side serving of sweet onion relish perfectly complemented the oozing, creamy, cheesy goodness.
‘A tasty reminder of home’ was an accurate description of my main course: the suitably named ‘chicken supreme’ reminded one of those home-made meals from mom’s kitchen. A simple, unpretentious dish of chicken lathered in a creamy mushroom and brandy jus made complete with an assortment of grilled vegetables, it is indeed a ‘supreme’ delight to consume.
With our eyes bigger than our stomachs, dessert was nearly amiss. But then a quick glance at the menu brought out the kid in me. Cookies and Cream is a dessert that will be a firm favourite with many a youngster out there. With white chocolate mousse sandwiched between two biscuits, and a separate serving of vanilla ice cream, this dessert is a rich, decadent affair.
Saveur is certainly a gem of the Simon’s Town area and we rolled out of there feeling suitably satisfied by the delectable food, ambience and friendly staff.
