In the middle of the Cape Agulhas, between a number of quaint little towns lies the Black Oystercatcher Wine Estate. A wonderful place abundant with stunning scenery, great hospitality and amazing wine, it is the site of this years Elim Wine Festival.

A farm with strong family values, it is currently in the hands of Dirk Human who serves as viticulturist and winemaker. In 1998, Dirk planted vineyards on the property becoming one of the pioneers in the Elim winemaking circle. In 2003, his first boutique wine was bottled and in honour of their home, the wine was named Black Oystercatcher after the rare birds who thrive along the Cape Agulhas coastline, just like their grapes. Like the Lomond Wine Estate, Black Oystercatcher strive towards conserving the biodiversity of region, including the birds that are found on the land.

The restaurant area is housed in a lovely big room, reminiscent of a family farmhouse. Art made by The Human family hang on the walls, homemade products are on display (and for sale) and fresh produce grown on the farm are served in the restaurant. On warm days, the restaurant spills out onto a porch that overlooks breathtaking landscapes. On the day I went, we were served a wholesome buffet lunch consisting of different salads, roasted springbok and the most exquisite phyllo pastries filled with waterblommetjies. If this is indicative of the menu, you are in for a treat.

The main reason we were there was (obviously) for the wine. We had a tailored tasting featuring wine from a number of estates in Elim, and got to try Black Oystercatcher’s Sauvignon Blanc. It was crisp, fragrant and lovely. Trying it against other Sauvignon Blancs from the area showed the versatility of the regions soil and winemaking techniques.

It gave us a glimpse of what to expect at the Elim Wine Festival taking place on 5 November 2016. They also hold daily tastings, including tutored tastings so you can learn more about the wine.

If you are all wined out, you can have their very own craft beer instead. We got to try it, and its really top notch. By the time you head to Black Oystercatcher for the festival, you will get experience their brand new venue and tasting area. This will undoubtedly enhance the already warm environment of the estate.
