A rustic and casual dining escape, Nomad Bistro & Bar stays true to its ‘fusion food’ offering; with a wide array of menu options and a homely feel, it has something for everyone.

Low lighting and a cosy indoor setting eased me into the feeling of the weekend, and the friendly and attentive staff added to the relaxed atmosphere. Nomad Bistro & Bar hosts comedy nights featuring local and international acts every Monday, Tuesday and Saturday for an entrance fee of R50.

Unsure of what to expect, this being my first stand-up comedy show, we decided to sit a fair distance away from the stage. We weren’t chancing being the butt of a comic’s jokes.

The table settings are wooden benches and low tables that add a casual feel to the restaurant. The space has an eclectic feel, incorporating various themes into the design – the brick walls contrast with grey walls painted with road signs – perhaps all roads lead to this very place.

A notable feature of the restaurant is the large world map mural. Our attentive waitress Pam made our meal experience thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing. The cocktail menu has many options, making it difficult to choose, but choice is good. A popular drink here is the London Strawberry Kiss, it is refreshing and noted for its sweet, fresh flavours.

Besides 15 different cocktails, you can choose from a list of beers both local and international.

The menu options consist of calamari, spicy curries, chicken wings, and roti wraps. There are both meat and vegetarian options. There is also a selection of gourmet burgers. If you’re in the mood for a small bite instead of an entire meal, you can choose from options like crispy cheese balls or spinach and beetroot moons.

The menu changes weekly, so make sure you check in about specials here. You could be in for a treat, on the night I attended, there were bottomless chicken wings and ribs. Whether you have something to celebrate, or just want to welcome in the weekend, there is bottomless bubbly on Friday evenings and during Sunday brunch.

As per the manager’s advice, I chose the Butter Masala Paneer curry, with an aromatic tomato gravy. The roti was freshly prepared – I was not disappointed. The curry was not overly rich and indulgent but had just the right amount of spice and chili.

They weren’t shy with the paneer either, which is rare. My partner, in the mood for seafood, ordered the salt and pepper calamari and chips. A word of advice to those who order the calamari: come hungry. With a more-than-decent portion size, the calamari is paired with a spicy sauce instead of the usual tartar.

Laughing between bites, four comedians had the crowd in stitches. Our favourite was Kagiso D Mokgadi, an award-winning South African comedy heavyweight. With our stomachs full of food and laughter, my sweet tooth got the better of me – pecan nut brownies served with a dollop of vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce was the next course.

As we savoured every bite, the comedy came to a close, but the night was just beginning. A live band was up next, titled The Guy is Alive. Drink in hand, relaxation mode on, we drank in the atmosphere and let the sweet tunes lull us into the weekend. It is a space to enjoy the best of many worlds, food, comedy and music. Cape Town never stops amazing me.
