It’s often said that some of Cape Town’s most unique attributes are within a few hours’ drive from the city centre. Whether it’s mountains and oceans, deserts and vineyards or open roads and small towns, the Western Cape offers it all. Here, we round up three short trips to take this spring – trust us, you won’t regret it!

1 Paternoster, West Coast

Paternoster lighthouse

Just 150 km north of Cape Town (that’s less than two hours’ drive time), Paternoster is an authentic fishing village and a popular tourist destination. Pack your swimsuit and enjoy the pristine white beach, browse for treasures at Die Winkel op Paternoster and visit the Cape Columbine Lighthouse, which was built in 1936 and is still in working condition today. If you’re planning an overnight stop, check in at the Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel or the stylish Abalone House before enjoying a seafood dinner at Gaatjie.

2 Robertson

De Wetshof Wine Estate, Robertson

A town proud of its heritage, Robertson’s hospitality spreads far and wide. Best known for its wine valley, it’s the lifeblood of the Langeberg region and the heart of Route 62. Come for the wine and diverse attractions – a lazy river cruise, anyone? – but stay for the rich historical sites and local produce, including freshly made breads, home-made jams and preserves and, of course, the wine.

3 McGregor

A picturesque country village nestled in the Langeberg Mountains with its neighbours Robertson, Ashton and Montagu, McGregor is a preserved 19th century South African village. Reach it early on a Saturday morning to enjoy the market held in the square next to the church, then do the Art Route featuring no less than 10 galleries before enjoying a whisky tasting at the Old Post Office turned pub. Kids will love the Eseljiesrus Donkey Sanctuary, where destitute, retired and rescued donkeys spend their last days.
