The humble chocolate chip cookie has come a long way since it was invented by American chefs Ruth Graves Wakefield and Sue Brides in 1938. The two women managed the Toll House Inn at the time, a home away from home for travellers to Massachusetts.

That chocolate chip cookie meant many things to many people. During World War II, soldiers stationed overseas would savour the cookies in their care packages, sent by their loved ones from back home. It was a bite of happiness, a taste of home and a sense of comfort.

Today, the chocolate chip cookie is also signature among Double Tree by Hilton hotels. They were originally given to VIP guests in the 1980s, but it is now part of the warm welcome that’s accompanied by a smile from staff at the front desk all the way in Cape Town.

It’s the little things that count, like an endless supply of choc chip cookies.

Woodstock is a special part of the city that has represented its vibrant side with access to the best the Mother City has to offer tourists. The Double Tree by Hilton hotel sits in front of Devil’s Peak and overlooks the city’s upper east side.

Even in the bustling Woodstock area, the hotel property is surprisingly spacious and tranquil, with rooms to suit all needs, from business travellers to families looking for a relaxing city weekend getaway.

Children (at least mine) are notoriously difficult to please and entertain for any amount of time. They will remind you about how bored they are, but for those travelling with 21st-century offspring, the hotel thankfully has all the modern amenities one could wish for like TVs, wifi and of course extra cookies on request. The only thing missing is a pool.

The hotel suites are spacious and have every comfort of home.

There is no shortage of quality hotels to choose from in Cape Town, but what sets Double Tree by Hilton apart is the effort it has put in over the past few months to move with the times by improving its aesthetic, while remaining truly South African in flavour. The ceiling to floor glass balcony doors allows the full effect and beauty of the Mother City to be appreciated by just sitting in the lounge and enjoying a book, or even relaxing in bed – because, why not? Table Mountain watches over you like a doting mother while you unwind indoors.

Floor to ceiling windows look out onto Devil’s Peak.

Liberty’s restaurant is a treat for all taste buds offering a variety of options to choose from Asian to South African cuisine. It is not a place I would expect to find a food experience, hotel food generally borders on mediocre. So you can imagine my surprise when the food that landed on my table was not only incredibly delicious, but also inventive, well-thought out and well presented.

They offer a new dining option in the form of a small plate tasting menu. There are five courses, with a palate cleanser in-between to turn up your dinner experience. I love hotels that offer great food after a long day out, whether it is for travel or for business, your last meal decides your mood before bedtime and possibly the morning after. Kudos on keeping up with Cape Town’s cuisine.

The food is exceptional at the Liberty Restaurant.

For those looking to venture out in the city, the CBD and a host of top-class restaurants and attractions are just a short drive or walk away.

The hotel is also a popular choice for business conferences, precisely for its location and facilities like business lounges and conference rooms suitable for all groups. The bar and lounge areas are ideal places to unwind after work with colleagues and friends.

Like the chocolate cookie, the Double Tree by Hilton has a magic formula that makes it a firm favourite for all visitors from all walks of life. It is tasteful and inviting and will leave you coming back for more.
